Daytona Beach motel standoff ends after gunfire; 19-year-old later dies

A standoff at a Daytona Beach motel ended Monday after gunfire between a man inside a room and police officers, followed by a SWAT entry that found the man critically wounded, according to police accounts reported by local news organizations. The 19-year-old died the following day.

Officers responded to the Lumina Motel at 640 S. Ridgewood Avenue on Aug. 24 to investigate a reported robbery involving $500 and a cellphone, FOX 35 reported. Police identified the man in the room as Ian Sylas Garner. Authorities alleged that Garner fired several rounds through the motel-room door after officers arrived. Three officers returned fire.

One officer sustained a minor arm injury from shrapnel, police said. Two other people got out of the room during the incident. Reports described them as being taken into custody, but the sources reviewed do not establish that either was arrested or charged. They are described here as occupants or witnesses because no booking or charging record reviewed establishes otherwise.

The shooting led to a barricade and a large police response along the 600 block of South Ridgewood Avenue. CFL Report posted three reels over less than two hours: an initial hostage-and-shots report, footage of SWAT officers moving in and an all-clear update. They form a single developing event, not three separate stories. CFL Report is not repeating the first post’s use of hostage as an established fact because later sourced accounts describe a robbery investigation and barricade but do not confirm a hostage finding.

After SWAT officers entered the room, Garner was found with what police described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. WESH later reported that police announced his death, and a family obituary records that Garner died Aug. 25 at age 19.

Apparent self-infliction is an initial investigative assessment, not a final cause-and-manner ruling. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officers’ gunfire, as is standard in an officer-involved shooting. The three officers who fired were placed on administrative leave, according to the reports. The available information does not establish which bullet caused Garner’s fatal injury; that determination would require findings from FDLE, the medical examiner or a completed investigative report.

The reported robbery, gunfire from the room and other alleged conduct remain police allegations, not adjudicated facts. Garner died without those allegations being tested at trial. This account attributes the allegations to police and avoids dehumanizing labels or gratuitous images of his injury.

CFL Report uses a wide exterior scene recorded after the emergency ended and does not show unrelated motel guests, room interiors or private conversations. CFL Report’s account includes the Aug. 25 death update even though all three source Facebook posts were published Aug. 24.

As of the Sept. 7 review, the sources establish a police exchange of gunfire, a minor officer injury, Garner’s critical wound and later death, and an FDLE review. Any future follow-up will rely on released FDLE or medical-examiner findings rather than speculation about the fatal shot.
