North Carolina Trooper Held Without Bond in Sheriff’s Captain’s Killing

HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A North Carolina Highway Patrol sergeant is facing a first-degree murder charge in the fatal shooting of Cumberland County Sheriff’s Capt. Adam Bean.

Nekime Matu Oxendine, 44, was indicted September 8, 2026. Moore County’s detention records confirm he was booked September 9 and is being held without bond.

Bean was killed March 27 outside a Hope Mills home. Investigators’ account, described in published reporting on search warrants, places the shooting after a confrontation involving two officers who had dated the same woman.

The woman reportedly told investigators that Oxendine came outside armed, fired into the ground and then fired additional shots that struck Bean. Deputies arrived to find her attempting CPR.

Bean had served with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office for approximately 20 years. Oxendine’s criminal case is separate from the Highway Patrol’s internal investigation.

The murder charge remains an allegation. Oxendine is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
