Daytona Beach police identify 20-year-old killed in School Street shooting

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported that police identified the man killed in an Aug. 21 shooting on School Street as 20-year-old Jyrius B. “Lawerence” of Palm Coast. Other public records spell the surname Lawrence, so CFL Report is noting the conflict rather than silently choosing one spelling. The discrepancy remains pending direct confirmation from Daytona Beach police or the medical examiner.

Officers responded at about 11:50 a.m. that Friday to a report of a person who had been shot. Police and other responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the 20-year-old died, according to the department’s public statements. The department publicly released his identity in a Sept. 1 update reported by the News-Journal.

CFL Report first posted from the School Street scene that a person was down and had not been transported, then published a second update reporting a death and saying the shooter was not in custody. Those posts document the same developing event minutes apart. The two posts are consolidated because the first caption was preliminary and the second supplied the material outcome.

The Sept. 1 update did not announce an arrest, according to the News-Journal. A review of publicly available sources through Sept. 7 did not locate a later arrest or case-closing announcement. That does not prove there has been no investigative progress; it means the sources checked for this article do not support a more definitive claim. CFL Report is not labeling the case unsolved because the department has not used that term in the sources reviewed.

Contemporaneous coverage by WFTV and FOX 35 also reported one death and no publicly identified suspect. WFTV reported that investigators towed a black Nissan Altima from the area, but police did not publicly explain its evidentiary role in the sources reviewed. A vehicle being removed from a scene does not establish that its owner, driver or occupants committed a crime.

CFL Report is using a wide scene frame that does not show the victim, medical treatment or grieving relatives. Close views of bystanders or children associated with the nearby care facility are not included, and social-media comments naming possible suspects are not repeated without official confirmation.

Investigators sometimes withhold details to protect leads and witnesses. Readers with direct information, original video or photographs from the area should contact Daytona Beach police through the department’s current public channels rather than posting possible evidence or speculation online.

The confirmed account is limited but important: a shooting was reported shortly before noon, lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, the victim died, and police had announced no arrest in their Sept. 1 update. If authorities later announce an arrest, CFL Report will clearly attribute the allegations, list only charges confirmed by an official record and note that the accused is presumed innocent unless convicted.
