Carjacking suspect arrested after wrong-way flight and crashes near State Road 44

A 41-year-old man was arrested after authorities say he fled a Florida Highway Patrol stop, carjacked a woman in Ormond Beach and drove into oncoming traffic before crashing near State Road 44 and Interstate 95.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Scott Taylor. According to the agency’s Aug. 20 release, the sequence began when Taylor fled from FHP and entered Volusia County on Interstate 95. Sheriff’s officials allege that he then took a woman’s vehicle in Ormond Beach. A license-plate reader later detected the stolen car near State Road 44, allowing law-enforcement officers to locate it.

Authorities attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued, at times traveling in the wrong direction, the sheriff’s office said. Near the Interstate 95 interchange, the car struck two other vehicles. Taylor then allegedly tried to enter another occupied vehicle and ran from officers before being taken into custody. He was evaluated at a hospital after the crashes.

The sheriff’s published account did not report a serious injury, but it did not say that nobody was injured. The CFL Report reel shows the aftermath, not every alleged act in the sequence.

The sheriff’s office said Taylor faced cases from FHP, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, New Smyrna Beach police and Ormond Beach police. The listed accusations included grand theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of carjacking, fleeing or attempting to elude, burglary of an occupied vehicle, two battery counts and false imprisonment. The agency also said he faced earlier charges from Daytona Beach. A charging list reflects allegations at booking or referral; it is not proof of guilt, and charges can be amended as prosecutors review a case.

The official release supplies substantially more detail than the original Aug. 20 Facebook caption, which reported that a carjacking suspect had been caught after a chase and crash on State Road 44. The official release and the scene video serve different purposes: the release provides the alleged sequence, while the video documents only the aftermath.

License-plate-reader alerts and the actions attributed to individual officers are presented here as the sheriff’s account, not as independently observed facts. The court docket, rather than the booking-stage list, will establish the filed counts, counsel, pleas and final disposition. Unless and until the case is resolved, Taylor is described here as arrested, accused or charged rather than as having committed the offenses.
