Man Arrested After Reported Home-Entry Attempt and Gunfire in DeLand

DELAND, Fla. — A man was arrested July 31 after a juvenile reported he tried to enter a DeLand home and fired two shots outside, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

The agency’s daily activity report says deputies were called at 3:23 p.m. The juvenile told investigators she awoke to an unknown man trying to pry open her bedroom window. After she told him to leave, she opened the front door to see whether he had gone; the man approached and tried to force his way inside.

The juvenile pushed him away, locked the door and ran back to her bedroom, where she heard two gunshots near the front door, the report says. Witnesses told deputies they saw the man fire, and investigators found spent shell casings on the porch.

Deputies contacted and arrested the man, then took him to the Volusia County Branch Jail. The Sheriff’s Office categorized the case as a weapons-law violation involving stalking, armed trespassing and firearm discharge. An arrest is an allegation; a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

CFL Report video published at 3:49 p.m. that day showed the law-enforcement response in the Rosewood Drive area. The Sheriff’s Office report identifies the location only as DeLand, Zone 23, and does not name the street.
