Bicyclist killed in U.S. 1 crash in Ormond Beach, police say

A 39-year-old bicyclist was killed Thursday night after being struck by a car on U.S. 1 in Ormond Beach, according to the Police Department’s preliminary investigation.

Police identified the bicyclist as Edward Joseph Ambro of Clermont. The crash was reported at about 8:30 p.m. Sept. 3 in the 800 block of North U.S. 1, near the Nova Road area. Ambro was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said his next of kin had been notified before his name was released.

According to the department’s initial account, a 2025 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling south in the outside lane while Ambro was riding south along the same roadway. Investigators were told that the bicycle moved from the shoulder into the travel lane before the collision. That description is preliminary, not a final assignment of fault.

The driver stopped, called 911 and remained at the scene, police said. The agency’s early findings did not indicate that speed or driver impairment contributed to the crash. Police also reported that the bicycle did not have an operable rear light. Investigators may revise or add to those findings after reviewing physical evidence, vehicle data, witness accounts and any available video.

No arrest or traffic citation was announced in the release reviewed for this article. The driver’s name was not included. Those omissions are not a conclusion about civil or criminal responsibility; they reflect the information police made public while the investigation was continuing.

Ormond Beach police asked anyone who saw the crash or has relevant video to contact Officer Carlos Ortiz through the Police Department. The department’s Sept. 4 release described the investigation as active. No later public resolution was located in the materials reviewed through Sept. 7, but the absence of an update does not independently establish the current case status. The closure shown in Thursday’s footage was incident-specific and is not a current traffic alert.
